Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam highlights the importance of long-term cooperation, investment in developing nations, and sustainable infrastructure to address global instability
On 7 April 2025, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam took to X (@Tharman_S) to share his views on the ongoing global disorder, calling for stronger international partnerships and investment in developing nations to create a more secure and sustainable future.
Speaking on the long-term nature of today’s global instability, President Tharman urged like-minded nations, both developed and developing, to unite in building shared prosperity. He emphasised the importance of forward-looking strategies that transcend borders and focus on inclusive growth.
The Singaporean President also highlighted the quiet yet critical investment revolution unfolding across developing countries. Such efforts, he noted, are not only essential for generating employment in youthful populations but also key to fostering global economic resilience, reducing the risk of future conflict, and accelerating the transition to a cleaner world.
Citing India’s significant infrastructure growth as an example, President Tharman pointed to the nation’s large-scale expansion of roads and electricity. This includes the development of one of the world’s largest interconnected energy grids, which he said has improved mobility, boosted education access among the youth, and enhanced the daily lives of women.
