SINGAPORE — In celebration of Singapore’s 60th year of independence, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has partnered with local filmmakers, organisations, and content creators to present a diverse array of media initiatives throughout 2025. These projects aim to encapsulate the essence of ‘Singaporean-ness’ and showcase the nation’s rich cultural tapestry.

A highlight of these initiatives is the drama series Emerald Hill, a spin-off from the acclaimed 2008 series The Little Nyonya. Set between the 1950s and 1970s, the 30-episode series delves into the lives of a Peranakan family in Singapore. Notably, Emerald Hill became the first Mediacorp Chinese drama to top Netflix Singapore’s most-watched list shortly after its premiere on 10 March 2025.

Another significant project is the anthology film Kopitiam Days, executive-produced by renowned director Eric Khoo. This film comprises six stories directed by both seasoned and emerging Singaporean filmmakers, exploring themes of national identity and community through narratives set in traditional coffee shops. The project underscores the collaborative spirit of Singapore’s film industry.

In the realm of exhibitions, the ArtScience Museum will host SingaPop! 60 Years of Singapore Pop Culture from August to December 2025. Curated by cultural icon Dick Lee, this multimedia exhibition will traverse six decades of Singapore’s pop culture, featuring elements from music, television, fashion, and food, offering visitors an immersive journey through the nation’s vibrant cultural evolution.

Complementing these are a series of short-form digital content pieces slated for release throughout the year. These bite-sized videos will spotlight uniquely Singaporean topics, from traditional trades to notable personalities, aiming to engage audiences across various social media platforms.

Yvonne Tang, Assistant Chief Executive of IMDA’s Media Industry Group, expressed pride in the industry’s efforts: “Our homegrown filmmakers and content creators have not only resonated with local audiences but have also showcased our unique ‘Singaporean-ness’ on the global stage. As Singapore marks its diamond jubilee, IMDA is proud to support the media industry in presenting a special collection of stories and exhibitions that reflect our rich, diverse experiences.”

These initiatives collectively celebrate Singapore’s journey over the past six decades, highlighting the nation’s cultural diversity and the evolution of its media landscape.
