Fiesta marks 15th anniversary, LISHA’s 25th year, and SG60 – a reflection of Singapore’s vibrant Indian community and multicultural spirit
Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat graced the Indian Cultural Fiesta 2025 on 13 April, joining Minister of State Alvin Tan, Mayor Denise Phua, High Commissioner Dr Shilpak Ambule, and community leaders in celebrating the rich heritage of Singapore’s Indian community. The event, held at the PGP Hall, commemorated several key milestones — the 15th anniversary of the Fiesta since its launch by founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in 2010, the 25th anniversary of the Little India Shop Owners and Heritage Association (LISHA), and Singapore’s 60th year of independence.
In his speech, DPM Heng highlighted the contributions of Singapore’s Indian community to the nation’s development — from pioneers like philanthropist P. Govindasamy Pillai to professionals across diverse sectors. He commended the community’s efforts to preserve cultural traditions while forging strong ties across ethnic and religious lines, which have become an integral part of Singapore’s social fabric.
He noted that the Indian Cultural Fiesta exemplifies how Singapore celebrates “unity in diversity,” and praised the community’s evolving identity that reflects both heritage and a shared national spirit. “Being Singaporean does not mean divesting our cultural roots,” he said, “but enriching our shared collective heritage.”
Touching on the global climate of instability and fragmentation, DPM Heng stressed the importance of trust, harmony, and a cohesive society. He referenced the Government’s initiatives such as the Forward Singapore agenda and highlighted the role of community organisations like LISHA and self-help groups like SINDA in promoting deeper cross-cultural understanding.
Reflecting on past experiences — including a memorable visit to Little India with former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang — DPM Heng noted how Singapore’s multiculturalism continues to impress international observers.
He concluded by expressing appreciation for the community leaders and youth volunteers who continue to keep traditions alive. As Indian sub-communities usher in the New Year over the next two days, he called on all Singaporeans to reaffirm their commitment to unity, inclusivity, and a better shared future.
