KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia and Vietnam have pledged to persist with their humanitarian assistance to Myanmar citizens, regardless of any restrictions, to ensure the well-being of the people affected by the ongoing crisis. The commitment was made during discussions between Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on April 28, 2025.

Prime Minister Anwar stressed the importance of maintaining a ceasefire in the region to guarantee the safety of humanitarian workers delivering aid. “We must ensure that all parties involved continue to uphold the ceasefire, so that aid can reach those in need,” Anwar stated in a Facebook post.

The pledge comes after a devastating earthquake struck Myanmar in late March, causing widespread destruction. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has raised alarms over the continuing humanitarian crisis, particularly highlighting the urgent need for shelter, clean water, sanitation, and medical care.

Beyond the humanitarian issue, the leaders also addressed regional trade matters, particularly the trade tariffs imposed by the United States. Prime Minister Anwar revealed that Malaysia had sent a representative through the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul, to seek a mutually beneficial resolution for both countries. He emphasized Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair and urged the United States to consider the interests of ASEAN member states in resolving the tariff dispute.

In light of these discussions, Prime Minister Anwar expressed his hopes for the continued strengthening of ASEAN’s ties with global partners. He emphasized the importance of cooperation, mutual respect, and the shared goal of regional prosperity and peace.

“Malaysia remains committed to strengthening regional and international relations through peaceful cooperation,” Anwar affirmed. “Our efforts are aimed at creating lasting harmony and improving the lives of people across the region.”
