Developed by SMF with DBS, EY and NYP, the new Playbook offers step-by-step guidance for manufacturers to meet sustainability goals in a cost-effective, practical way.

Singapore – 28 May 2025 – In a significant step toward a greener economy, the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF), in partnership with DBS Bank, EY, and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), has launched the Decarbonisation Playbook for Manufacturers. This is Singapore’s first sector-specific, action-oriented guide to help manufacturing companies — particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) — begin or accelerate their sustainability journeys.

The Playbook was developed through extensive industry consultation, drawing insights from more than 70 manufacturers across seven key sub-sectors. With 77% of participants being SMEs, the Playbook acknowledges that while ambitions around sustainability are high, translating them into real-world actions remains a challenge for many firms. The guide is designed to close this gap with practical tools, case studies, and frameworks grounded in local context.

At its core is the “DECARB” framework — a six-step process that outlines clear and achievable pathways for companies at various stages of decarbonisation maturity. From emissions mapping and goal setting to implementation and measurement, the framework is supported by case studies from leading manufacturers such as GlobalFoundries, Dynapack Asia, and ATC-Treatment. Each example offers valuable insights into overcoming obstacles and adopting scalable green solutions.

The Playbook is a result of multi-stakeholder collaboration:

  • SMF contributed deep industry knowledge and brought its CSO-as-a-Service capability to shape the Playbook’s structure and practical relevance.
  • DBS offered expertise in sustainable financing and tools like the DBS ESG Ready Programme to support manufacturers’ green transition.
  • EY provided sector-specific technical and regulatory insights.
  • NYP ensured the Playbook’s long-term impact by integrating its contents into its curriculum for over 1,600 students annually — cultivating sustainability mindsets across the next generation of professionals.

The Playbook serves as both a starting point and a long-term reference for businesses navigating new regulations, global supply chain requirements, and rising stakeholder expectations.
