Singapore Defence Minister calls for stronger regional cooperation and use of emerging technologies to secure trade routes and airspace.
At the 8th Putrajaya Forum held on 21 April 2026 in Malaysia, Singapore’s Minister for Defence, Mr Chan Chun Sing, delivered a speech highlighting the importance of using emerging technologies to strengthen ASEAN security.
He stressed that technology must serve real-world purposes, such as keeping international airspace and waterways open, safe, and efficient. Referring to recent tensions in the Straits of Hormuz and the ongoing Middle East conflict, he noted that disruptions in key trade routes can quickly impact global supply chains, energy prices, and the cost of living, especially in Southeast Asia.
Mr Chan highlighted the strategic importance of the Malacca Straits, a critical trade route governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas. He emphasised that while transit rights are guaranteed, countries must balance openness with safety and security concerns.
The minister explained how technologies such as ADS-B and AIS have improved tracking of aircraft and ships, enabling real-time monitoring and better coordination. These systems help build transparency, which in turn strengthens trust among nations and ensures smoother operations in busy air and sea lanes.
Looking ahead, he pointed to newer innovations like digital twin technology and unmanned traffic management systems, which can further optimise traffic and reduce congestion. He also warned about risks to GPS systems, including spoofing, and highlighted the need for more resilient solutions like quantum sensing, along with stronger cybersecurity measures.
Mr Chan concluded by urging ASEAN nations to work together by connecting systems, aligning standards, and sharing trusted data. He said such cooperation would reduce risks, improve efficiency, and reinforce ASEAN’s central role in maintaining regional stability.
He ended by calling for collective action, respect for international law, and continued openness to ensure long-term growth, investment, and better livelihoods across the region.
