Celebrations in Jakarta and Osaka highlight unity, diversity, and a shared vision for a resilient and sustainable ASEAN future

JAKARTA/OSAKA — The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) today marked its 58th anniversary, celebrating more than five decades of unity, resilience, and shared purpose under the theme “Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable ASEAN Future.” This year’s commemorations were held in two cities — Jakarta, Indonesia, and Osaka, Japan — symbolising one ASEAN community bridging diverse cultures and geographies.
At the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta, Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn delivered remarks underscoring the start of a new chapter in ASEAN community-building, following the successful adoption of ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future. He reaffirmed that inclusivity and sustainability will remain at the centre of ASEAN’s regional integration agenda as the bloc addresses future challenges in pursuit of a prosperous community.

Dr Kao’s message reflected on ASEAN’s shared journey and looked ahead to building a future where diversity is a strength and sustainability is a shared responsibility. From incorporating sign language interpreters to using eco-friendly banners, offering locally crafted souvenirs, and partnering with inclusive enterprises, this year’s celebration embodied the commitment to leave no one behind and to minimise environmental impact.
As part of the occasion, Prime Minister of Malaysia and ASEAN Chair 2025, The Honourable Anwar Ibrahim, delivered pre-recorded remarks commemorating the anniversary and reaffirming the bloc’s dedication to unity and progress.
The dual-city celebrations served as a reminder of ASEAN’s enduring role in fostering peace, cooperation, and development — not just within the region, but also in its partnerships across the globe.
