Strengthening defence ties, the visit highlighted long-standing military exchanges and cooperation between Singapore and China.
SINGAPORE’S Minister for Defence, Mr Chan Chun Sing, was hosted on 15 September 2025 at the headquarters of the People’s Liberation Army Southern Theatre Command (PLA STC) in Guangzhou as part of his introductory visit to China. PLA STC Commander General Wu Yanan received Mr Chan, and both leaders reaffirmed the close people-to-people ties and practical cooperation between the PLA STC and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). They noted the regular interactions through bilateral platforms such as Exercise Cooperation between the armies and Exercise Maritime Cooperation between the navies.

On 16 September, Mr Chan continued his visit to the PLA STC Navy headquarters in Zhanjiang, where he was welcomed by PLA STC Navy Political Commissar Vice Admiral Yang Zhiliang. He inspected a Guard of Honour aboard the PLA Navy’s Luyang III-class destroyer Zhanjiang and toured the PLA Navy’s shore training facility. Mr Chan was also briefed on advanced capabilities, including its simulation training system and damage control centre.

This visit reflects Singapore’s commitment to maintaining strong and open defence ties with regional partners while supporting stability in the Asia-Pacific.
