A seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in international relations and public service, H.E. Kateryna Zelenko has built a career defined by commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and the pursuit of peace. Currently serving as the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Singapore, Ambassador Zelenko has represented her country across a range of diplomatic platforms, contributing to international engagement at a time when global diplomacy faces complex and evolving challenges. Her work reflects not only the responsibilities of representing a nation abroad but also a broader dedication to advancing international understanding, resilience, and cooperation.

In a conversation with IN Diplomacy’, Ambassador Zelenko reflected on the meaning of leadership and service through the lens of the 2026 International Women’s Day theme, International Women’s Day “Give to Gain.” The discussion explored the deeper values behind diplomatic work, the evolving role of women in international affairs, and the importance of perseverance and solidarity in addressing global challenges. For Ambassador Zelenko, the theme resonated deeply with the realities of public service and the often unseen efforts that underpin diplomacy.

“There are things that cannot be measured,” she remarked thoughtfully. “Usually, these are the most important and valuable things in life, like love, care, faith and hope.” In diplomacy, she explained, the most meaningful contributions are often intangible. While projects and negotiations may have measurable goals, the true weight of diplomatic responsibility lies in decisions that affect societies and the future of nations. “Gives and gains in diplomatic work are often immeasurable,” she noted, adding that success in diplomacy frequently unfolds over time, especially when the ultimate aim is to bring societies closer to lasting and just peace.

Ambassador Zelenko’s understanding of service has been shaped by years of diplomatic engagement and public responsibility. Like many who dedicate their careers to international service, she reflected on the personal sacrifices that often accompany such roles. Diplomats, she observed, spend much of their time serving broader societal interests, sometimes at the expense of time with family. “We spend our time prioritising serving others while our children grow up missing their mom or dad at home,” she said candidly. Yet she also emphasised that these sacrifices carry meaning when the outcomes benefit communities and future generations. In such moments, she added, families often share in the sense of purpose that accompanies public service.

Her current posting in Singapore has also offered unique perspectives on women’s empowerment and the evolving role of women in leadership. Located at the crossroads of one of the world’s most dynamic regions, Singapore has demonstrated strong potential for advancing opportunities for women across various sectors. Ambassador Zelenko observed that the city-state’s openness to innovation and technological advancement has created new avenues for women to pursue meaningful careers and leadership roles.

“Singapore is in the heart of the world’s fastest and most dynamically growing region,” she said. “Here you can feel the breath of the future and the potential of new prospects.” She noted that during her time in Singapore, she had encountered many inspiring women who contribute actively to their communities and professions. In her view, Singapore is well positioned to emerge as a trendsetter in promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality.

At the same time, she acknowledged the broader global progress being made toward greater inclusion in diplomacy. Over the years, modern diplomatic institutions have gradually become more accessible spaces for women and young professionals. Within Ukraine itself, efforts have been made to advance gender equality in public institutions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine conducted the country’s first gender audit among state authorities after joining the global HeForShe initiative in 2018. The ministry subsequently established a Women Leadership Club and launched mentorship programmes aimed at supporting young female diplomats. These initiatives, Ambassador Zelenko noted, have contributed to a growing number of women serving in Ukraine’s diplomatic missions abroad.

Reflecting on the next generation of leaders, Ambassador Zelenko offered a message of encouragement to young women aspiring to careers in diplomacy or international relations. “Go ahead and never be afraid,” she advised. Confidence and determination, she suggested, remain essential qualities for those seeking to shape the future of global dialogue.

She also highlighted the inspiring leadership of Olena Zelenska, whose initiatives have demonstrated the impact of international cooperation and humanitarian advocacy. Through the Summits of First Ladies and Gentlemen and the work of the Olena Zelenska Foundation, efforts have been directed toward supporting children, families, and displaced communities affected by conflict, reinforcing the importance of compassion and solidarity in international engagement.

As the world commemorates International Women’s Day, Ambassador Zelenko’s reflections underscored the enduring values that guide diplomacy, service, resilience, and collaboration. Extending her message to women across professions and communities, she emphasised the importance of purpose and self-belief. “Believe in what you do and don’t forget to take care of yourself,” she said. In her view, the growing strength of women’s leadership worldwide represents not only progress for gender equality but also a powerful force for building a more cooperative and humane global community.
