As ASEAN Chair, Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro officially inaugurated the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila. The opening sessions focused on advancing ASEAN’s regional priorities and preparations for the 49th ASEAN Summit later this year.
The 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) officially commenced today at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila, with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro presiding over the opening proceedings in her capacity as ASEAN Chair.
Secretary Lazaro led the ASEAN Foreign Ministers through the Opening Ceremony, followed by the Plenary Session and the AMM Retreat. The meetings brought together the region’s top diplomats to exchange views on key regional developments, strengthen ASEAN cooperation, and discuss priorities for the organisation amid an evolving geopolitical landscape.
During the sessions, the Foreign Ministers deliberated on ASEAN’s strategic agenda, including initiatives aimed at reinforcing regional integration, maintaining peace and stability, and enhancing the bloc’s resilience in addressing emerging challenges. The discussions also reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to fostering unity and ensuring that the organisation remains responsive to the needs of its Member States.
The meeting further set the stage for the 49th ASEAN Summit, which will also be hosted by the Philippines in Manila this November. The Foreign Ministers reviewed preparations for the leaders’ gathering, where Heads of State and Government are expected to advance key decisions on ASEAN Community-building, regional cooperation, and engagement with external partners.
As one of ASEAN’s most significant annual ministerial gatherings, the 59th AMM serves as a key platform for shaping the regional agenda ahead of the Summit. The outcomes of the meeting are expected to contribute to ASEAN’s continued efforts to promote peace, stability, economic cooperation, and sustainable development across Southeast Asia.
