The Embassy of Cuba in Singapore marked the centenary of Fidel Castro’s birth with a photo exhibition highlighting his life, legacy and international engagements.
The Embassy of Cuba in Singapore, in collaboration with the White Deer Club, held the opening of the photo exhibition “One Hundred Years with Fidel” on 26 August 2026 in Singapore. The exhibition marked the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and presented photographs documenting different stages of his life, the Cuban Revolution and his international engagements.

Held at the White Deer Club at 20 Camden Park, the exhibition brought together members of the diplomatic community and invited guests. The programme included remarks by H.E. Lisbet Quesada Luna, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Singapore, followed by reflections from representatives who had personally met Fidel Castro or had been involved in Cuba’s international cooperation.
The exhibition featured photographs from the Office of Historical Affairs of the State of Cuba, alongside works by renowned Cuban photographers Roberto Chile, Alex Castro and Raúl Abreu. The collection covered Fidel Castro’s childhood and early years, the struggle against the Batista dictatorship, the Cuban Revolution and subsequent periods of his public life.
In her remarks, H.E. Lisbet Quesada Luna, Ambassador of Cuba to Singapore, highlighted Fidel Castro’s influence beyond Cuba, particularly through his engagement in multilateral affairs. She noted that “Fidel is beyond Cuba. Fidel is part of the world,” while referring to his role in the G77 and China, the Non-Aligned Movement and other international initiatives.
H.E. Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe of the High Commission of South Africa highlighted Cuba’s contribution to African liberation and development. She said that “Cuba remains one of the very few countries with an enduring expression of what South-South cooperation means,” citing cooperation in healthcare, education and other areas, including the Nelson Mandela-Fidel Castro Medical Collaboration Programme.
Ambassador Jessica María López Piña of Venezuela reflected on the relationship between Fidel Castro and former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, highlighting their role in strengthening regional cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Representing Qatar, H.E. Abdulaziz Bin Ahmed Al Malki Al Jehani recalled his meetings with Fidel Castro and discussed Cuba-Qatar cooperation in healthcare. He described the establishment of a Cuban hospital in Qatar as “one of the most successful experiences,” noting that the facility continued to operate for many years.
Following the remarks, Ambassador Quesada Luna invited guests to tour the exhibition, which concluded with photographs documenting Fidel Castro’s final years and the farewell ceremonies held across Cuba following his death in November 2016. The event provided an opportunity for members of the diplomatic community to engage with Cuba’s historical and international legacy through photography and personal recollections.
The photo exhibition provided a visual account of Fidel Castro’s life and Cuba’s modern history while also highlighting relationships between Cuba and countries in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
Ambassador Quesada Luna invited guests to view the exhibition following the speakers’ reflections. She said the collection sought to present different dimensions of Fidel Castro through photographs documenting his public responsibilities, international engagements and interactions with people.
The exhibition concluded with a guided tour led by the Ambassador, allowing guests to view the photographs and learn about the historical context behind the collection.
The Embassy of Cuba’s centenary programme continued to provide an occasion for diplomatic representatives and members of the international community in Singapore to engage with Cuba’s history and its longstanding relationships with countries across different regions.
