Macao Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai delivered a speech at the National University of Singapore on 31 August, outlining Macao’s development and opportunities for deeper cooperation with Singapore and Southeast Asia. The visit also saw the signing of an education cooperation MoU between the University of Macau and the National University of Singapore.
Macao Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai delivered a speech titled “Macao under ‘One Country, Two Systems’: Cooperation Opportunities for Singapore and Southeast Asia” at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on 31 August. The occasion provided an opportunity to highlight Macao’s development under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework and its potential to strengthen ties with Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries.
Chinese Ambassador to Singapore Cao Zhongming attended the event and said he was privileged to listen to the Chief Executive’s speech. He also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Educational Cooperation between the University of Macau and NUS, together with Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai and George Loh, Associate Vice President (Strategic Partnerships) of NUS.
The educational cooperation agreement marks another step towards strengthening academic and institutional links between Macao and Singapore. Through closer collaboration in education and other areas, universities and institutions from both sides can create greater opportunities for knowledge exchange, talent development and broader regional cooperation.
The event comes as Macao enters the first year of its Third Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development, covering 2026 to 2030. The plan represents a new stage in Macao’s economic and social development, with greater opportunities for engagement with regional partners.
Ambassador Cao expressed confidence that Macao’s development in this new era will bring more opportunities to Singapore and ASEAN countries. Closer cooperation in education, economic development and other fields could further contribute to connectivity and mutual development between Macao, Singapore and the wider Southeast Asian region.
