Ambassador H.E. Macaraig discussed Philippines-US ties, ASEAN, and regional economic cooperation.
Philippine Ambassador to Singapore H.E. Medardo G. Macaraig participated as a special guest in the “America Through the Eyes of” segment at the Regional Economic Conference 2026 (REC), organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (AmChamSG) on 9 September 2026 at the Shangri-La Singapore. Moderated by AmChamSG CEO Dr. Hsien-hsien Lei, the session provided an informal discussion on the United States, the Philippines, ASEAN, and developments shaping Southeast Asia’s economic and geopolitical environment.
Drawing on his experience in the Philippine foreign service, Ambassador H.E. Macaraig discussed the evolution of Philippines-US relations and the enduring role of the United States in the Philippines and the wider region. He also underscored the importance of maintaining dialogue and cooperation amid changing regional and global circumstances.
The discussion examined ASEAN’s role in promoting regional stability and supporting an environment conducive to business and investment. Ambassador H.E. Macaraig highlighted the value of continued engagement between ASEAN and its external partners, including the United States, in supporting regional growth, resilience, and competitiveness.
Ambassador H.E. Macaraig and Dr. Lei also exchanged views on emerging areas of economic cooperation, infrastructure and connectivity, technology and innovation, and opportunities for business and investment partnerships involving the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States.
Entrepreneurship and the Filipino community in Singapore were also discussed. Ambassador H.E. Macaraig recognised the contributions of Filipino professionals, workers, and entrepreneurs in Singapore, as well as the value of the skills and experience they acquire overseas in creating opportunities and supporting enterprise in the Philippines.
The Regional Economic Conference 2026 provided a platform for government, business, and policy stakeholders to discuss developments affecting Singapore and Southeast Asia and explore opportunities for regional economic cooperation. The participation of Ambassador H.E. Macaraig added a Philippine perspective to discussions on US engagement, ASEAN, economic relations, and emerging opportunities in the region.
