Dr Imola Anett Szabó, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Hungary in Singapore, met CubeWerkz founder David Ang to spotlight the growing Singapore cubing community ahead of the third Singapore Kempinski Open.

The Embassy of Hungary in Singapore has thrown its support behind the local speedcubing scene, with Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Dr Imola Anett Szabó meeting David Ang, founder and owner of CubeWerkz, to learn more about his work building Singapore’s cubing community.

The meeting put a spotlight on one of Hungary’s best-known cultural exports: the Rubik’s Cube, invented by Hungarian architect and sculptor Ernő Rubik in 1974. Nearly half a century on, the puzzle remains an enduring symbol of Hungarian ingenuity, and its popularity in Singapore has created an unexpected thread of connection between the two countries.

That connection will be on full display at the Singapore Kempinski Open 2026, now in its third edition, organised jointly by CubeWerkz, The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore and the Embassy of Hungary in Singapore. The competition draws speedcubers from across the region to compete on solve times, with the Hungarian embassy backing the event as a celebration of the creativity and community spirit the puzzle has inspired.

Dr Szabó said the embassy was delighted to support an initiative that brings people together around a shared passion, calling it a fitting tribute to one of Hungary’s most recognisable inventions and its ability to forge new connections between Hungarian and Singaporean communities.

Further details on the Singapore Kempinski Open 2026, including registration, are available via the World Cube Association’s official competition page.
