Discover the history of Malaysia’s first man-made lake and enjoy a unique railway journey across its tranquil waters. From scenic lakeside strolls to fishing and nearby wildlife attractions, Tasik Bukit Merah offers an appealing escape into nature.
Located in Perak, Tasik Bukit Merah is a destination where history, nature and an unusual railway experience come together. Built as early as 1906 during the reign of Sultan Idris I, the 28th ruler of Perak, the lake is recognised as Malaysia’s first man-made lake. Covering approximately 40 sq km, it stretches across the districts of Kerian and Larut Matang, forming a significant landscape in the state.
One of the lake’s most distinctive features is its railway crossing, which offers passengers a different perspective of the surrounding waters. Known as the Bukit Merah Lake Railway Bridge or Bukit Merah Marine Viaduct, the 3.5 km structure carries railway tracks across the lake, creating a memorable journey with expansive views of the water.
Completed in 2013, the viaduct replaced the former railway track and forms part of the Government’s 329 km Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP), which connects Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar. The wider railway project was designed to improve rail connectivity and reduce journey times along the route.
For passengers, travelling across the viaduct provides an opportunity to admire the lake from an unusual vantage point. With water stretching across the landscape, the train journey offers a striking contrast to the surrounding greenery and is a distinctive experience for visitors exploring Perak.
The railway structure stands approximately 12.5 metres above sea level, with its height providing clearance above the lake’s maximum water level. Passengers can therefore enjoy the views while travelling along this elevated section of the railway.
Beyond the train journey, Tasik Bukit Merah offers opportunities to slow down and appreciate the natural surroundings. Visitors can spend time fishing at the lake or taking a leisurely stroll along the lakeside, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere away from busier urban destinations.
The surrounding area also features attractions for those wishing to extend their visit. Bukit Merah Laketown Resort offers additional leisure experiences, while the Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation provides another point of interest for visitors interested in wildlife and orangutan conservation.
Whether travelling by rail, enjoying a quiet afternoon by the water or exploring nearby attractions, Tasik Bukit Merah presents a distinctive way to experience Perak’s landscape. Its combination of historical significance, scenic views and railway heritage makes it a destination worth including in a Malaysian travel itinerary.
