Commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Singapore and Japan, the newly launched research hub aims to foster collaborative scholarship and policy dialogue across the region.
On 27 October 2026, the National University of Singapore (NUS) East Asian Institute (EAI) officially established the Japan Centre, a dedicated research hub designed to deepen academic and policy linkages between Japan and Southeast Asia. The launch arrives during a milestone year, coinciding with SJ60, which marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan.
H.E. Ambassador Ishikawa Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to Singapore, delivered the congratulatory remarks at the launch ceremony. During the event, Ms Sim Ann, Second Minister for Foreign Affairs and Second Minister for Home Affairs, provided the keynote address, underscoring the enduring partnership and mutual interests shared by the two nations.
To mark the occasion, the Japan Centre hosted its inaugural conference titled “Japan and Southeast Asia: Forging a Trusted Partnership for Peace, Growth, and Resilience”. The morning conference brought together a distinguished group of scholars and practitioners from across the region to examine economic cooperation, regional security, and cultural exchange. The event was generously supported by a grant from The Japan Foundation, whose President was also in attendance to deliver welcome remarks.

The new centre will be guided by the dedicated efforts of the EAI team, led by EAI Director Professor Alfred Schipke and Senior Research Fellow Dr Ryu Yongwook, who will serve as the Head of the Japan Centre. Through scholarship and sustained regional fieldwork, the centre will bring a distinctively Southeast Asian perspective to Japanese studies.
Moving forward, it is hoped that the Japan Centre will serve as a premier, trusted platform connecting researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. By connecting these communities, the centre will help surrounding countries better understand Japan’s domestic and foreign initiatives while enabling ongoing regional development through shared insights.
