MPA and IACS collaborate on digitalisation and decarbonisation initiatives to ensure the safe integration of new maritime solutions.
In a significant move towards advancing maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) have inked a Letter of Intent (LOI) for collaboration. The LOI, signed by Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, and Mr Nick Brown, Council Chairman of IACS, during the 33rd session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London, focuses on fostering technical standards and unified requirements. This collaboration aims to guarantee the secure implementation of emerging maritime solutions, particularly in areas such as smart and autonomous ships, digitalisation, cybersecurity, marine electrification, and the adoption of zero- and low-carbon fuels aboard vessels.
Under the LOI, the two organizations commit to regular information and knowledge exchange, engaging in discussions about industry challenges, best practices, standards, and emerging technologies. Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, emphasized the importance of harmonised standards in ensuring the safe implementation of new technologies, expressing the organization’s commitment to working closely with IACS for the benefit of the global maritime community. Mr Nick Brown, IACS Chair, highlighted the significance of the collaboration with Singapore MPA in supporting IACS’ efforts to prioritize safety in the decarbonisation agenda. By leveraging the data and expertise of one of shipping’s key bunkering and global hub ports, IACS aims to address risks and implement mitigation measures in the future fuel supply chain, ensuring safety considerations are central to the industry’s transition to a decarbonised future.
