Prime Minister Settha Thavisin speaks with Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, to strengthen ties and express gratitude for assistance during a recent aviation emergency.
On May 28, 2024, at 9:00 a.m., Prime Minister Settha Thavisin of Thailand had a telephone conversation with Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, to introduce himself and discuss bilateral relations. The call took place at the Prime Minister’s office on the 2nd floor of the Thai Khu Fa Building, Government House. Mr. Chai Watcharong, the spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, disclosed details of the discussion.
Prime Minister Thavisin congratulated Prime Minister Wong on his new role and expressed optimism about strengthening the already close relationship between Thailand and Singapore under Wong’s leadership. Thavisin also extended best wishes to former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife.
During the call, Prime Minister Thavisin thanked the Thai side for their assistance when Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, en route from Heathrow to Changi, made an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Thavisin expressed his regret over the incident and assured that those injured and still recovering in Thailand would receive the best care.
Prime Minister Wong appreciated Prime Minister Thavisin’s letter of congratulations and the assistance provided during the emergency landing. He acknowledged the severity of the incident and mentioned that the plane has since returned safely to Singapore, with authorities investigating the cause. Wong thanked the Thai government and people for their support during the incident.
The conversation also included an invitation from Prime Minister Thavisin for Wong to visit Thailand, which Wong welcomed, expressing his interest in visiting within the year. Both leaders discussed the importance of continuing to foster cooperation and preparing for the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Singapore in 2025.
