The partnership aims to enhance research and collaboration on sustainable urban solutions, addressing challenges in climate action, public health, and liveability.
The Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration on urban solutions. The agreement aims to address key challenges in urbanisation, climate action, public health, and liveability, fostering knowledge exchange and research-driven innovations.
The MoU was officially signed by Mr Hugh Lim, Executive Director of CLC, and Prof Tai Lee Siang, Deputy President, Chief Innovation and Enterprise Officer, Centre Director (DesignZ), and Programme Director (Design and AI) at SUTD. The signing took place at a CLC Lecture Series event focusing on Regenerative Design for High-Density Cities. Through this partnership, both institutions will deepen their research efforts in areas such as Innovative Cities, Healthy Cities, Regenerative Cities, Mobility, and Urban Liveability. SUTD’s research strengths in technology-driven solutions align with CLC’s forward-looking studies on sustainable urban development.
CLC and SUTD have previously collaborated on projects such as the Dementia-Friendly Neighborhood Project (DFN), which was awarded the Horizon Shaper Award at the Bilbao Bay Awards 2024 and the MND Minister’s Award 2024. In November 2024, SUTD also took part in the CLC-led Cities Day Programme at the COP29 Singapore Pavilion in Baku. Moving forward, the partnership will focus on developing city case studies on urban innovation and regeneration. SUTD will also be involved in upcoming programmes such as the Social Behavioural Science Community of Practice in March and July this year, future CLC Lecture Series events, and the World Cities Summit. Additionally, SUTD will participate in the inaugural session of CLC’s Regenerative City Forum Series, taking place on 13–14 March 2025.
Mr Hugh Lim expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that CLC looks forward to working closely with SUTD, whose strong research capabilities in innovative and technology-driven urban solutions align with CLC’s goals. He added that this partnership will contribute to Singapore’s urban development and support global discussions on creating liveable, sustainable, and regenerative cities. Prof Tai Lee Siang highlighted that SUTD sees design and advanced technologies like AI as key drivers in shaping cities to be more sustainable while enhancing the well-being of residents. He emphasised that this collaboration allows SUTD to apply research and innovation to real-world urban challenges, fostering regenerative development and interdisciplinary research between SUTD students and faculty.
