Two cultural events in Singapore spotlight the influence of Bali on Mexican and regional art, commemorating 50 years of Mexico-Singapore diplomatic ties.

SINGAPORE – In celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Singapore, the Embassy of Mexico in Singapore is hosting two cultural events that highlight the legacy of Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias and his deep artistic connection with Southeast Asia, particularly Bali.

The first event, MIKTA Cultural Series: Panel Discussion – “Bali: Inspiration for Mexican and Singaporean Artists”, took place on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the Embassy of Indonesia in Singapore. This insightful session featured Ambassador Agustín García-López Loaeza, also the lead curator of the Miguel Covarrubias exhibition; renowned writer and scholar Gretchen Liu; Philippe Augier, founder and director of Museum PASIFIKA in Bali; and was moderated by Teo Hui Min, curator at the National Gallery Singapore. The evening concluded with a reception and a traditional Balinese dance performance, enhancing the multicultural dialogue.

The second event, the Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition – “Miguel Covarrubias: A Mexican Artist’s Fascination with the Pacific”, is scheduled for Thursday, 8 May 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Level 10 of the National Library Building on Victoria Street. Jointly organised by the National Library of Singapore and the Embassy of Mexico, the exhibition offers a curated glimpse into Covarrubias’s travels and artistic interpretations of the Pacific and Bali. Open to the public from 9 May to 3 August 2025, the exhibition forms part of the library’s acclaimed Untold Stories series.

Both events are supported by the MIKTA group – a partnership among Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Türkiye, and Australia – reinforcing cultural diplomacy and artistic collaboration between regions.
