
Foreign Ministers exchange congratulatory letters to celebrate more than five decades of strong bilateral ties.
SINGAPORE — Singapore and Sri Lanka have commemorated the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations, underscoring their enduring partnership and shared commitment to regional cooperation and development.
To mark the milestone, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, exchanged congratulatory letters highlighting the long-standing friendship and close cooperation between the two countries.
In his letter, Dr Balakrishnan noted the progress made since diplomatic ties were established on 27 July 1970, and emphasised the strong economic links, people-to-people connections, and educational exchanges that continue to underpin the bilateral relationship. He expressed Singapore’s readiness to further expand cooperation in areas such as trade, transport, and the digital economy.
Minister Herath, in his message, reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Singapore. He highlighted the wide-ranging cooperation in political dialogue, economic engagement, education, technology, maritime affairs and and people-to-people exchanges. He also underlined Sri Lanka’s intention to strengthen collaboration through ASEAN-centred platforms and other regional and multilateral fora.
Both Ministers expressed confidence that the strong and trusted partnership will continue to grow in the years ahead, contributing to mutual prosperity and the region’s sustainable development.
