Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong joined Singaporeans and Japanese friends at Expo 2025 in Osaka to celebrate Singapore’s 60th National Day and highlight the enduring friendship between Singapore and Japan.

Senior Minister (SM) Lee Hsien Loong delivered a speech on 24 August 2025 at the Singapore National Day celebrations held at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. He was on a working visit to Osaka and Tokyo from 21 to 27 August.

In his address, SM Lee expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for its hospitality and reflected on Singapore’s journey since independence. He highlighted the significance of Singapore’s 60th National Day and the symbolism of the country’s pavilion, “The Dream Sphere”, which has attracted more than 1.5 million visitors. The 17-metre-tall pavilion, built from 17,000 recycled aluminium discs, represents the diversity and aspirations of Singapore’s people.

SM Lee emphasised the values of resilience, inclusivity, and shared purpose that have shaped Singapore’s progress over the past six decades. He also noted the importance of international cooperation, particularly at a time when the multilateral system faces challenges, and stressed Singapore’s continued commitment to contributing constructively on the global stage.

Turning to bilateral ties, SM Lee highlighted the longstanding partnership between Singapore and Japan, which marks its 60th anniversary next year. He noted Japan’s early investments that supported Singapore’s industrialisation and pointed to ongoing collaborations in areas such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and smart city solutions. He also underscored the strength of people-to-people ties, with vibrant communities in both countries and growing exchanges among youth.

Concluding his remarks, SM Lee affirmed his confidence in the future of Singapore-Japan relations. He described the friendship as a model of mutual respect and cooperation and expressed optimism that the next chapter would bring even deeper ties and new opportunities.
