The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Kao Kim Hourn, met with Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore, on the sidelines of the 32nd ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Retreat in Taguig, Philippines. The meeting focused on advancing ASEAN’s economic agenda and strengthening regional cooperation.

The engagement took place in the context of the 32nd AEM Retreat, which convened economic leaders and policymakers to discuss regional priorities under the ASEAN Economic Community. The discussion provided an opportunity to review key developments and coordinate efforts in addressing emerging economic challenges.

During the meeting, both sides discussed Singapore’s preparations for its upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, as well as the progress of negotiations on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). They also exchanged views on external economic relations, sustainability initiatives, and the evolving global geo-economic landscape.

Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing ASEAN’s economic integration agenda. They expressed their intention to maintain close cooperation in the lead-up to Singapore’s Chairmanship, with a view to strengthening regional resilience and promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
