Singapore manufacturers explore partnerships and innovation opportunities during a successful business mission to Japan. Industry leaders highlight collaboration, cultural understanding, and new growth prospects.

The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) successfully concluded its Japan Business Mission 2026 in April, with visits to Kyoto, Shiga, and Osaka. The mission focused on exploring opportunities in advanced manufacturing, precision engineering, sustainability, and research and development.

Mr. Erman Tan and Ms. Linda Hay from Asia Polyurethane Manufacturing Pte Ltd (APU) shared their insights following the trip. They highlighted the importance of understanding Japan’s relationship-driven business culture. Due to differences in language, government policies, and work practices, intermediaries such as SMF and Japanese business associations play a key role in building connections. These intermediaries help bridge cultural gaps, translate business values, and create meaningful exchanges between companies.

During the mission, curated business-to-business networking sessions allowed participants to engage directly with Japanese firms. One of the most valuable visits was to Kyocera, where participants learned about founder Kazuo Inamori’s Amoeba Management philosophy, which emphasizes teamwork and profitability. The delegation also engaged with companies from Shiga Prefecture, including Fukushima Kogyo Co. Ltd and TAK Manufacturing. These discussions opened potential collaboration opportunities, such as sourcing materials and applying protective coatings to extend the lifespan of industrial pipes.

A standout experience was the visit to CrossMedical / CrossGroup, where a heart simulator made from polyurethane demonstrated how manufacturing innovation can improve healthcare outcomes. The detailed process of creating 3D heart models highlighted Japan’s commitment to precision and quality. The APU team noted this as a potential area for further research and development.

SMF played a crucial role throughout the mission by organizing meetings, facilitating introductions, and providing guidance on regulatory and business practices in Japan. The federation’s credibility helped build trust with Japanese partners and provided Singapore companies with valuable insights into market entry strategies, including taxation and company registration.

Summing up the experience, Mr. Tan described the mission in three words: “Connect. Impact. Synergy.” The mission strengthened ties between Singapore and Japan, paving the way for future collaborations and shared growth.
