An evening of music, dance and reflection brought together nearly 200 guests in Singapore to honour the enduring legacy of Rabindranath Tagore while unveiling a renewed direction for Tagore Society Singapore.
Tagore Society Singapore commemorated the 165th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore on 17 May 2026 with a vibrant cultural evening celebrating his timeless ideals of humanity, creativity and cultural openness. Held under the Society’s renewed theme, Culture. Conscience. Community., the event gathered distinguished guests, cultural leaders and members of the public for an inspiring programme of performances and reflection.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Dinesh Vasu Dash, Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, was unable to attend after falling ill, though his message was warmly shared with the audience during the event. Among those present were Mr. Tamil Marren, President of Singapore Indian Association, several society presidents and members, Mr. M.A. Malik, former High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Singapore, Mr. Koh Chye Hock, an ardent admirer of Tagore, alongside artists and performers representing diverse cultural communities.
Around 200 attendees remained deeply engaged throughout the two-hour programme, which featured nearly 30 presenters showcasing Rabindra Sangeet, dance, poetry recitation and Hindi songs inspired by Tagore’s compositions. The performances explored themes central to Tagore’s philosophy, including love, freedom, nature, courage and universal humanity, highlighting the continued relevance of his ideas within Singapore’s multicultural society.
The evening also marked the beginning of a renewed chapter for Tagore Society Singapore. During the event, the Society’s President announced several new initiatives, including a refreshed website, a new logo and theme, the launch of the Friends of Tagore Society initiative, and plans for a quarterly newsletter, workshops, a yearbook and a more extensive cultural programme calendar.
The event concluded with an appreciation dinner, following what many attendees described as a meaningful and memorable celebration of Tagore’s artistic and philosophical legacy. By blending cultural performances with community engagement, the Society reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting Tagore’s enduring message of harmony, creativity and shared humanity.
