The High Commission of South Africa in Singapore, led by High Commissioner Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, welcomed representatives from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Mr Jonathan Tay and Ms Kelly Khoo, on 1 July 2026 for discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in higher education, innovation, and skills development. The meeting reflected the growing commitment of both countries to advancing partnerships that support sustainable economic growth and technological progress.

During the engagement, the two sides explored opportunities for collaboration across several strategic sectors, including digital technology, the digital economy, financial technology (fintech), robotics, health technology, and hospitality and tourism management. These areas align closely with South Africa’s economic priorities, particularly in fostering innovation, developing future-ready talent, and enhancing industry competitiveness.

As Singapore’s first university of applied learning, the Singapore Institute of Technology is recognised for its strong emphasis on industry collaboration and practice-oriented education. Through close partnerships with businesses and organisations, SIT equips students with practical knowledge and real-world experience while delivering programmes designed to meet evolving workforce demands. In addition to its expertise in digital innovation, the university offers programmes in health technology and an honours degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management, preparing graduates for careers in globally competitive industries.

The discussions also highlighted the value of knowledge exchange between academia, industry, and government in addressing emerging economic opportunities. By leveraging Singapore’s strengths in applied learning and technological innovation, both sides identified potential avenues for cooperation that could contribute to skills development, research collaboration, and capacity building.

The meeting marked another positive step in strengthening bilateral relations between South Africa and Singapore. Through continued engagement in education, innovation, and sector-specific collaboration, both countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to building resilient partnerships that promote economic development, technological advancement, and mutually beneficial opportunities.
