The event underscored the importance of educational exchanges in strengthening regional ties and developing future leaders.
The Australian High Commission in Singapore recently hosted a panel discussion on Diplomacy and Strategy for participants of the Westpac Australia-Asia Fellowship Scholars programme and the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan. The session brought together emerging Australian leaders with senior representatives from the High Commission to explore Australia’s diplomatic, trade and defence engagement across Southeast Asia.

The discussion featured Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, H.E. Robyn Mudie, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner Amelia Walsh, and First Secretary (Defence) Tim Moore. Drawing on their professional experiences, the panellists shared insights into their respective roles representing Australia overseas and discussed the evolving strategic and economic landscape of the region.

The event also highlighted the significance of international education and exchange programmes in fostering stronger regional partnerships. Through initiatives such as the Westpac Australia-Asia Fellowship Scholars programme and the New Colombo Plan, Australian university students gain valuable first-hand exposure to Southeast Asia, enabling them to develop a deeper understanding of the region while building lasting professional and cultural connections.

Australia’s longstanding educational links with Southeast Asia continue to serve as a cornerstone of its regional engagement. By supporting students through government and university-led programmes, Australia is investing in the next generation of leaders equipped with the knowledge, networks and cross-cultural experience needed to strengthen cooperation between Australia and its regional neighbours.

The High Commission noted that initiatives such as these not only enrich students’ academic and professional development but also contribute to deepening Australia’s enduring partnerships across Southeast Asia, reinforcing the shared commitment to closer people-to-people connections and regional collaboration.
