“Sixty-one years is not a long time in the long history of nations. However, these 61 years have witnessed one of the most incredible and inspiring stories of development: Singapore.
Over these 61 years, Singapore went from being a country lacking in natural resources and seemingly overwhelming odds against its survival, to one of the most developed and stable countries in the world.
Much has been written about Singapore’s remarkable development. If I were to summarize the foundations of its success, I would say that the most crucial factors have been the long-term vision of its leaders, the commitment to education and the well-being of its people, the relentless fight against corruption, and its ongoing openness to the world.
I have the honor of representing Colombia, a nation that has enjoyed more than two centuries of independence. During this time, which we recently commemorated alongside our Singaporean friends we, too, have achieved much in making Colombia a freer and more prosperous nation.
But the path of independence has no final destination. Rather, it is a journey that constantly challenges us, pushing us to renew our institutions, question existing models, and make difficult decisions.
Against a global backdrop of historic transformations, it is a privilege for me to witness firsthand how Singapore is reinventing itself to remain at the forefront, without neglecting its people—including those from more modest social backgrounds—and without wavering in its commitment to an international order grounded in shared principles and rules rather than the law of the strongest.
I hope our efforts in the coming years will further strengthen our political dialogue, trade relations, and the ties between our peoples. May Colombia and Singapore grow freer and prosperous each day.
