Singapore and Luxembourg discussed bilateral cooperation, international law and global developments during talks.
Singapore Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong hosted Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Luc Frieden for an official visit from 6 to 8 September 2026. On 7 September, PM Frieden received a ceremonial welcome hosted by PM Wong and held talks with him, followed by an Official Lunch hosted by PM Wong in Singapore.
During their meeting, PM Wong and PM Frieden discussed the warm and growing relations between Singapore and Luxembourg and explored ways to deepen cooperation in areas including finance and critical and emerging technologies. PM Wong welcomed Luxembourg’s intention to increase its engagement with Singapore and the Southeast Asian region, including through the establishment of the Luxembourg Embassy in Singapore in July 2026.
The two Prime Ministers also discussed cooperation between Singapore and Luxembourg as fellow small states. They agreed on the need for both countries to work closely to uphold international law and a rules-based global order.
PM Frieden also called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during his official visit. Their discussions covered how like-minded countries such as Luxembourg and Singapore could work together to promote stability, predictability and the rule of law in a volatile global environment.
The two sides also exchanged views on current geopolitical dynamics, including developments in Europe. The discussions reflected the range of issues addressed during PM Frieden’s engagements in Singapore, spanning bilateral cooperation and wider international developments.
On 8 September, PM Frieden is scheduled to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture organised by the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute. The lecture will be moderated by Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat.
