Singapore PM Lawrence Wong highlighted community service, solidarity and shared responsibility at SKML anniversary.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong joined members of the Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League (SKML) as the organisation commemorated 85 years of service, solidarity and community spirit. He recognised SKML’s longstanding contribution to the Indian Muslim community and its wider role in Singapore society.
The roots of SKML can be traced to the late 19th century, when Tamil Muslim immigrants from Kadayanallur arrived in Singapore in search of better opportunities. The community organised itself to provide mutual support, laying the foundations for an organisation that would later become Singapore’s largest Indian Muslim organisation.
Over the decades, SKML has served the Indian Muslim community while extending its contributions to the wider Singaporean society. In his remarks, Prime Minister Wong drew a parallel between the organisation’s history and Singapore’s broader development as a multicultural nation.
He said that while communities looked after their own, the idea of “our own” extended beyond family, language or faith to include Singaporeans of every race, language and religion.
Prime Minister Wong also highlighted the importance of sustaining the values and community spirit established by earlier generations. He said the contributions of past generations had produced a “rich harvest” in Singapore and called on the present generation to continue building on that foundation.
He urged Singaporeans to keep reaching out to one another, strengthen trust and work together to build Singapore’s future.
The Prime Minister congratulated SKML on its 85th anniversary and recognised its longstanding commitment to community service and solidarity. The anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the organisation’s history, its contribution to Singapore’s Indian Muslim community and its continuing role in supporting social cohesion.
