In an exclusive IN Diplomacy interview, Haryana Chief Minister Shri Nayab Singh Saini discussed Singapore-inspired urban development, sustainability and investment opportunities
Haryana Chief Minister Shri Nayab Singh Saini outlined plans to draw on Singapore’s urban development and sustainability practices during an exclusive interview with Ms Nomita Dhar, Editor-in-Chief of IN Diplomacy. He highlighted opportunities for partnerships with Singapore companies in urban planning, renewable energy, logistics, warehousing and industrial wastewater management as Haryana develops new city and tourism projects.
Which Singapore attraction impressed you most and would you like to replicate in Haryana?
Haryana is coming up with a global city built on the concept of Walk to office from home. This is being conceptualised on 1000 acres of land. During my visit to Singapore, i saw the concept of Gardens By Bay and Marina Bay area which is built on a similar model, here nature, businesses coexist and that is the vision we have for Haryana. We would want to understand the model in detail and dovetail best practices to bring such models to Haryana.
Have you signed any MoU in Singapore to bring its urban planning, water management or transport model to Haryana?
In Haryana, more than MoUs, we weight partnerships, we have received interests from waste water management companies, urban planning and development companies and the vision that they hold for haryana is impressive. Now, our focus is to bring them to Haryana, translate their vision into reality.
What Singapore-style green and clean city features do you plan to implement in Gurugram and Faridabad?
We would want to implement and promote the concept of sustainable living – where public transport network is strong, citizens have access to parks and building that are built on the vertical forest or green scrapers concept.

How many MoUs have you signed here and what is their expected investment in Haryana?
As i said, for Haryana, partnerships and outcome related projects are more important than signing MoUs. Very interestingly, the Singapore companies who have signed investment intentions with us previously, met and assured of more investment commitments. This is the partnership i am referring to, where our partners grow and translate visions to reality. We have received interests in the areas of urban planning and development, renewable energy, logistics and warehousing and industrial waste water management.
If Singapore firms support you, what is one new tourist or city attraction you want to build in Haryana?
To iterate, we would be dovetailing the concept of marina bay sands, gardens by the bay. We would also endeavour to dovetail the concept of night safari in our upcoming Aravalli safari project.
