Singapore students gained marine science experience through OceanX research and education programmes.
Singapore’s Minister for Education and Minister-in-Charge of Social Services Integration, Mr Desmond Lee, highlighted OceanX’s contribution to science education during his address at OceanX Summit 2026. He outlined the partnership between OceanX, the Ministry and Singapore’s Science Centre Board, which began in 2024 and provides students and educators with opportunities to explore marine research through visits aboard the OceanXplorer and livestreams of scientific expeditions.
The summit’s theme was “New Frontiers. New Ocean Futures”. Minister Lee addressed OceanX Co-CEOs Mr Mark Dalio and Professor Vincent Pieribone, as well as Mr Ray Dalio, the organisation’s Co-Founder and Advisor. He noted that oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, sustain life, support trade and regulate the climate, although much remains unexplored.

According to Minister Lee, more than 570 students and educators had toured the OceanXplorer to learn about its research technologies and media capabilities and hear directly from its crew. Hundreds more from Singapore’s schools and higher learning institutions had participated in ship-to-shore livestreams during OceanX scientific expeditions.
These programmes introduced students to the practical applications of classroom knowledge. Marine scientists and engineers use robotics and imaging to investigate difficult-to-reach parts of the ocean, while data specialists apply artificial intelligence to analyse complex datasets. Educators and communications professionals also help explain scientific discoveries to wider audiences.
Minister Lee emphasised the importance of strong academic foundations, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and lifelong learning. He said, “We must prepare all our students for these changes, first, by building strong foundations that prepare them to thrive in the future.”

He also highlighted the contribution of industry partners to practical learning. Referring to OceanX’s deep-sea exploration platform, Minister Lee said, “And whilst industry provides tremendous opportunities, a platform like OceanX, where you are exploring the deep seas, can add that additional opportunity to light the fire of curiosity.”
Minister Lee concluded by thanking OceanX, Singapore’s educational institutions and the Science Centre Board for supporting these learning experiences. He emphasised the importance of nurturing students’ problem-solving abilities and sense of responsibility towards the oceans.
