Prime Minister Narendra Modi champions India’s AI prowess, emphasizing responsible and ethical use at the GPAI Summit in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated the Annual Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi today. The Summit, running from December 12-14, 2023, is a pivotal gathering of 29 member countries, with India leading as the chair in 2024.

The Prime Minister highlighted the transformative impact of AI on a global scale, acknowledging both its positive and negative aspects. In his address, he underscored India’s role as a major player in AI talent and innovation, with a vibrant spirit among the youth pushing the boundaries of AI technology. The Prime Minister mentioned recent initiatives, including an AI agriculture chatbot and emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive growth guided by the principle of ‘AI for All.’

Expressing the need for responsible and ethical AI use, Prime Minister Modi proposed exploring a software watermark to label AI-generated information and introducing an audit mechanism to categorize AI tools based on capabilities. He stressed the importance of transparency, inclusivity, and the ethical use of AI to build trust.

The Prime Minister also outlined challenges posed by AI, such as deepfake, cyber threats, and data theft, emphasizing the need for a global framework for Responsible Human-Centric AI governance. He called for collaboration and posed questions on data sets, testing protocols, and the introduction of a software watermark.

The Summit will feature sessions on various topics, including AI and global health, education, skilling, and data governance. Notable participants include experts from over 50 GPAI member countries, with representation from leading AI organizations and startups worldwide.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that the outcomes of the GPAI Summit would contribute to building a responsible and sustainable future. The event includes additional attractions such as a Research Symposium, AI Gamechangers Award, and the India AI Expo.
