Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong emphasizes the crucial role of partnerships in Singapore’s success at the launch of the Singapore Government Partnerships Office.
Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong delivered a speech on January 19, 2024, during the launch of the Singapore Government Partnerships Office (SGPO). The event, attended by Cabinet Colleague Mr Edwin Tong and various distinguished guests, highlighted the significance of partnerships in Singapore’s nation-building journey.
DPM Lawrence Wong emphasized that partnerships have been a vital, albeit less discussed, component of Singapore’s success. The country’s belief in the power of collaborations has played a pivotal role in its economic transformation, exemplified by the “3rd World to 1st” achievement within a single generation.
DPM Lawrence Wong traced the roots of Singapore’s partnership ethos to initiatives such as tripartism, where unions, businesses, workers, and the government collaborated closely. This unique approach, distinct from conflicts in many other countries, aimed at promoting economic growth while ensuring fair benefits for all.
Additionally, DPM Lawrence Wong highlighted grassroots movements initiated through the People’s Association in 1960, showcasing the mobilization of volunteers and community empowerment even before Singapore gained independence.
The speech outlined the evolution of partnership strategies within the government, including consultation mechanisms, ground-up initiatives, and the establishment of Public, Private, and People (3P) divisions in various ministries.
Acknowledging the diverse backgrounds of partners present at the launch, Wong expressed gratitude for their contributions to various causes, such as civic participation, community support, and business engagement. He credited the spirit of partnership for successfully navigating challenges like the Asian Financial Crisis, 9/11, SARS, and the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
As Singapore faces a changing global landscape with rising geopolitical risks, Wong stressed the need to adapt and marshal against external challenges. He warned of the potential erosion of trust and societal divisions in the face of economic and social strain.
To further strengthen partnerships, Wong announced the launch of the Singapore Government Partnerships Office. The SGPO aims to make partnering with the government more seamless and accessible through a Partners Portal, catalyzing new partnerships, and advocating for deeper citizen-government collaboration.
Wong encouraged interested Singaporeans to come forward, share their ideas, and engage with the SGPO. The office will serve as a hub connecting citizens with relevant agencies, like-minded individuals, and potential funding sources.
The launch of SGPO aligns with the broader Forward Singapore exercise, which seeks to refresh the social compact, forge new consensus, and broaden and deepen partnerships for Singapore’s next phase of nation-building.
