The Supreme Court of Singapore and the Court of Cassation of France held their first Judicial Roundtable on 31st Janauary 2024 to discuss the integration of technology in justice systems, marking a significant step in judicial collaboration between the two countries
THE Supreme Court of Singapore and the Court of Cassation of France convened the inaugural Singapore-France Judicial Roundtable on January 31, 2024, setting a landmark in the judicial cooperation between the two nations. This event, co-chaired by The Honourable Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon of Singapore and The Honourable First President Christophe Soulard of the Court of Cassation of France, brought together judges and officials from both countries to explore the interface between technology and justice systems.
During the Roundtable, Justice Aedit Abdullah and Justice Goh Yihan from the Supreme Court of Singapore presented on the integration of technology into court procedures and the legal challenges emerging from advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), respectively. Chief Justice Menon highlighted the significance of technology, particularly AI, in offering new prospects for judiciaries while also presenting complex legal issues that need to be addressed.
The idea for the Roundtable was conceived during a bilateral meeting at the Court of Cassation in France in May 2023, where both judiciaries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance judicial cooperation. The MoU emphasized dialogue and exchange on critical topics like technology use and trends in dispute resolution.
Chief Justice Menon expressed his optimism that the Roundtable would serve as a vital platform for sharing ideas and experiences, fostering avenues for fruitful collaboration between the Singapore and France judiciaries.
