In a speech at the Singapore World Water Day 2024, President Tharman emphasized the importance of water conservation and innovation for sustainable living
AT the Singapore World Water Day celebrations held in 2024, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, along with key government officials including Minister Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State Dr. Amy Khor, and Senior Parliamentary Secretary Mr. Baey Yam Keng, addressed the critical issue of water sustainability on 9th March 2024. The event, marked the start of a month-long initiative emphasizing Singapore’s dedication to water conservation, brought together citizens and policymakers to discuss innovative strategies for ensuring the city-state’s water security.
President Tharman highlighted the existential challenge of water scarcity faced by Singapore and stressed the importance of individual efforts in saving, conserving, and reusing water. He praised the Public Utilities Board (PUB) for its continuous innovation in water management and encouraged the adoption of sustainable consumption habits among Singaporeans. President Tharman pointed out the significant water footprint associated with everyday items like food, clothing, and furniture, urging a shift towards more water-efficient choices.
Furthermore, President Tharman lauded PUB’s efforts in exploring energy-efficient solutions in desalination and water recycling. He mentioned ongoing collaborations with Nanyang Technological University and Aquaporin Asia to develop innovative technologies that could lead to more sustainable water management practices, not only for Singapore but also as models for other countries.
The President’s speech underscored Singapore’s commitment to addressing the water challenge through innovation, individual action, and sustainable living practices, reinforcing the city-state’s position as a leader in environmental sustainability.
