Minister for Trade & Industry Gan Kim Yong delivered opening remarks at a press conference on May 13, 2024, concerning Singapore’s new Cabinet line-up. He took the opportunity to thank outgoing Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for his two decades of dedicated service and his personal mentorship. Gan praised Lee’s leadership, which he believes has significantly contributed to Singapore becoming a more caring and inclusive society.
Having served under all three of Singapore’s Prime Ministers, Gan expressed his honor and humility at being asked by incoming Prime Minister Wong to continue his service in the new Cabinet. He highlighted his ongoing collaborations with Lawrence Wong, first in neighboring wards and later in the Cabinet and as Co-Chairs in the Multi-Ministry Taskforce (MTF) during the pandemic. He commended Wong’s strong leadership, especially during crises.
As Minister for Trade & Industry, Gan will prioritize economic challenges, aiming to strengthen the economy’s resilience, create opportunities for businesses and individuals, and support enterprise development. Additionally, in his role as Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Gan is committed to supporting Prime Minister Wong by working with DPM Heng and various ministries and agencies to coordinate government efforts and formulate key policies.
