Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan meets Singaporean leaders to strengthen bilateral ties and regional cooperation.
SINGAPORE, 28 May 2024 – The Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Seri Utama Mohamad Hasan, visited Singapore on an official visit. During his visit, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The discussions focused on reaffirming the robust partnership and historic people-to-people ties between Singapore and Malaysia.
Both sides expressed their commitment to continue high-level exchanges and work together bilaterally and within ASEAN amidst a more uncertain geopolitical environment. Prime Minister Wong conveyed his appreciation for Malaysian Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s invitation for him to make an early introductory visit to Malaysia.
In a separate meeting with Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, both ministers emphasized the importance of continuing close cooperation for mutual benefit, including enhancing economic cooperation and connectivity. They discussed initiatives such as the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. The ministers agreed to make progress on these issues ahead of the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Malaysia later this year. They also discussed strengthening ASEAN Centrality and ensuring Southeast Asia remains a bright spot globally, with Minister Balakrishnan expressing Singapore’s readiness to support Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.
