High Commissioner Senarath Dissanayake and Minister Grace Fu discuss climate initiatives and bilateral cooperation at the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment.
SINGAPORE, 7 June 2024 – High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Senarath Dissanayake, met with Minister for Sustainability and Environment and Minister-in-Charge for Trade Relations, H.E. Grace Fu, at the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment in Singapore.
During the meeting, the High Commissioner outlined Sri Lanka’s agenda for addressing climate change and advancing the green economy. He highlighted several key initiatives undertaken by Sri Lanka to combat climate change, particularly within the Indian Ocean and tropical belt regions.
High Commissioner Dissanayake emphasized the importance of expediting the ongoing negotiations to operationalize the Implementation Agreement under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the two countries, focusing on collaboration under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the establishment of a Capacity Building Fund. He also sought Singapore’s support and technical assistance in establishing the world’s first Climate Change University in Sri Lanka.
Minister Grace Fu commended Sri Lanka’s proactive measures in addressing climate change and environmental issues. She highlighted the value of Sri Lanka’s contributions to the global response to environmental challenges. Minister Fu also noted the recent visit by the Singapore Food Agency delegation to Sri Lanka as a positive step towards collaboration in exports, welcoming the progress on importing Sri Lankan rice.
Additionally, Minister Fu emphasized the benefits of the Singapore Cooperation Programme for capacity-building on climate change and related fields, offering programs on sustainable development and climate action. The meeting underscored the strong bilateral relationship and mutual commitment to addressing global climate and food security challenges.
Joining Minister Fu were Divisional Director (International Policy Division) Mr. Ranjeet Singh, Minister’s Special Assistant Ms. See Wan Yin, and Senior Assistant Director of the Ministry of Trade and Industry Mr. Vann Ang. High Commissioner Dissanayake was accompanied by the Minister and Head of Chancery of the High Commission, Mr. Ahamed Razee, and Minister (Commercial) Mr. Yasantha Yaddehi.
