Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan highlights the strategic partnership between Singapore and New Zealand at a book launch event.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, delivered remarks at the launch of “Perspectives of Two Island Nations: Singapore and New Zealand,” a book by Dr. Anne-Marie Schleich. The event was attended by New Zealand High Commissioner Ms. Gabrielle Rush and Executive Deputy Chairman of the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Mr. Ong Keng Yong.

Dr. Balakrishnan emphasized the unique geographical and historical ties between the two nations. He noted that while New Zealand is a destination that requires effort to reach, Singapore benefits from its position as a central hub in Southeast Asia. He humorously compared the size of Singapore to New Zealand’s Lake Taupō, highlighting the significant geographical differences.

The minister reflected on historical connections, recalling the presence of New Zealand troops in Singapore’s Dieppe Barracks from 1971 to 1989. He underscored the enduring strategic partnership between the countries, which dates back to the early years of Singapore’s nationhood and the establishment of the Five Power Defence Arrangements.

Dr. Balakrishnan highlighted the shared strategic perspectives of Singapore and New Zealand, particularly their commitment to a rules-based international order and open multilateral trading systems. He mentioned that Singapore’s first bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was with New Zealand, illustrating the close economic ties. The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA) were also cited as key collaborations.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, both nations stood together to maintain global supply chains and ensure equitable access to vaccines. This solidarity was exemplified by the transit of vaccines through Singapore to New Zealand.

Recent developments include the visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Singapore, where a new “Supply Chains and Connectivity” pillar was announced under the Singapore-New Zealand Enhanced Partnership. This initiative aims to address future challenges and promote sustainable solutions.

Dr. Balakrishnan acknowledged New Zealand’s role as a Dialogue Partner of ASEAN, contributing to regional integration in the green and digital economies. He looked forward to the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-New Zealand Dialogue Relations in 2025, coinciding with the 60th year of diplomatic relations between Singapore and New Zealand.

In conclusion, Dr. Balakrishnan praised Dr. Schleich and the 27 contributors for their efforts in creating the book. He highlighted the importance of the book in reflecting the agency and strategic contributions of small states like Singapore and New Zealand.
