Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen discussed the future role of the US in Asia and the implications of US-China relations at the Aspen Security Forum on 17 July 2024 (Singapore Time). The event featured over 400 key leaders from the security and defence sectors.
On 17 July 2024 (Singapore Time), Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen participated in a fireside chat panel during the opening session of the Aspen Security Forum. The forum, attended by over 400 distinguished leaders, policy experts, military officials, and US national security personnel, is a prominent biannual conference focusing on security and foreign policy.
Dr Ng’s session, moderated by Foreign Policy’s Editor in Chief Ravi Agrawal, centered on the evolving role of the US in Asia and its implications for global stability. Dr Ng emphasized the significant changes in America’s global influence, particularly in trade and finance. He noted, “America, which would have been the moving spirit for the globalised world for trade and finance, that would benefit small and large countries, is now changed. We do not know where we will go, and I do not think China is the only reason.”
Addressing the strategic presence of the US in Asia, Dr Ng raised a critical question: “Can US sustain its presence in Asia solely predicated on military power?” He highlighted the growing importance of China as the largest trading partner for most Asian countries and suggested that the US must adapt its policies to maintain influence in the region.
Discussing US-China relations, Dr Ng pointed out that the dynamics between these two superpowers would shape the future of many nations. He stated, “The US-China conundrum will decide the fates of all our nations for this decade and the next. America has to decide – the policies of ‘small yard, high fences’, security alliances – ultimately, its foreign policy towards China… there are good reasons to believe that if the US can have a positive trajectory with China, it will make for certain greater stability, and certain greater growth.”
Dr Ng expressed optimism about the potential for improved US-China relations under strong American leadership, suggesting that such progress could lead to enhanced global stability and economic growth.
The Aspen Security Forum, held annually in Colorado since 2010, is known for bringing together key figures in security and defence to discuss pressing global issues. Dr Ng’s participation in the forum underscores Singapore’s active engagement in international security dialogues. His visit to the US spanned from 15 to 18 July 2024 (Singapore Time).
