Mr. Hayden Ng discusses how AFDS promotes the rich cultural heritage and innovative designs of ASEAN fashion, overcoming challenges and fostering global recognition.
In an exclusive interview with Sun Media, Mr. Hayden Ng, the premier founder of the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase (AFDS), shared his insights and aspirations for promoting the rich and diverse fashion heritage of the ASEAN region. Mr. Ng explained that the AFDS was inspired by the need to highlight the often-overlooked fashion traditions of Asia. While Western fashion dominates globally, Asian fashion boasts a rich tapestry of traditional clothing styles, from the intricate kimono of Japan to the vibrant sarees of India. The showcase aims to promote these unique styles and the cultural narratives they represent. This initiative has provided ASEAN designers with opportunities to present their work at various events globally, celebrating Asian culture and heritage.
One of the significant challenges AFDS faces is funding. As a nonprofit platform, many designers self-fund their participation, which can be a financial burden, especially for those from less affluent countries. Mr. Ng highlighted how modern technology, such as translation apps, helps overcome language barriers, facilitating smoother communication and collaboration among designers. Since its inception on April 1, 2016, at Orchard Library, AFDS has grown significantly. The showcase has participated in numerous fashion weeks across ASEAN and beyond, including successful showcases in Nanning, China, and collaborations in Kazakhstan and Milan. Today, AFDS represents 40 designers and 30 models, a testament to its growth and resilience. The support from partners like the Indonesian Fashion Chamber has been instrumental in the success of events like ASEAN International Fashion Week.
Designers are selected based on their aesthetics, professional appearance, and approach to life and design. AFDS is committed to promoting slow fashion, emphasizing perfect fit and high-quality fabrics. The showcase also supports sustainable practices by promoting indigenous fabrics and using AI technology for designing digitally printed fabrics, reducing waste, and preserving cultural heritage. Mr. Ng envisions transforming the AFDS into a globally recognized event, ASEAN International Fashion Week, to bring ASEAN designers’ unique styles to international fashion capitals. This initiative aims to foster cross-cultural exchanges and inspire new global fashion trends.
Through AFDS, Mr. Ng hopes to convey the rich diversity and creativity of ASEAN fashion. The showcase aims to raise awareness and appreciation for ASEAN designers and models, fostering a deeper understanding of the vibrant fashion industry in the region. By nurturing local talents and promoting cross-cultural collaboration, AFDS aspires to inspire the next generation of fashion designers on the global stage. The AFDS plays a crucial role in advancing the fashion industry by fostering innovation through cross-cultural exchange, creativity, and talent development. It provides a platform for designers to experiment and express cultural richness, promoting cross-cultural collaboration and understanding. Mentorship programs support emerging designers and models, ensuring sustainable growth in the industry.
“My vision for the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase extends beyond the runway. We aim to establish a global legacy by elevating the recognition of ASEAN designers, models, and brand partners on an international stage. Through fostering collaboration, celebrating diversity, and pushing boundaries of creativity, we aspire to leave a lasting impact that amplifies ASEAN’s vibrant fashion culture worldwide,” said Mr. Hayden Ng.
