Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean welcomed President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea at the 47th Singapore Lecture, highlighting the deepening ties between Singapore and South Korea.

On October 9, 2024, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Teo Chee Hean, opened the 47th Singapore Lecture, welcoming President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea. The event marked President Yoon’s first state visit to Singapore.

Teo Chee Hean emphasized South Korea’s status as a global leader in technology, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. He also highlighted South Korea’s significant cultural impact through the “Hallyu” wave, which has captivated the world.

Singapore and South Korea enjoy strong bilateral ties, with both nations ranking as each other’s seventh-largest trading partner. Recent developments, such as the opening of Hyundai’s robotics smart factory in Singapore, further cement their economic and technological collaboration. The two countries also signed an Extradition Treaty and several agreements in areas like supply chain resilience, food safety, and technology.

Senior Minister Teo highlighted the strong cooperation between ASEAN and South Korea, particularly in trade, digital transformation, and innovation. He noted that ASEAN is South Korea’s second-largest trading partner and outlined future plans to enhance their economic partnership.

President Yoon Suk Yeol, a former prosecutor known for his efforts in combatting corruption, took office with a vision for South Korea as a “Global Pivotal State.” His focus has been on revitalizing relations with Japan and advocating for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

In his address, titled “A Vision for Korean Unification Toward a Free, Peaceful, and Prosperous Indo-Pacific Region,” President Yoon elaborated on his approach to engaging North Korea and his broader vision for peace and stability in East Asia.
