
Sri Lankans in Singapore gather to commemorate the nation’s milestone with a solemn flag-hoisting ceremony, cultural reflections, and a call for unity.
The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore commemorated the 77th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence with a flag-hoisting ceremony on 4th February 2025 at the SEAMEO Regional Language Centre (RELC) auditorium. The event brought together over 200 attendees, including members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community, migrant workers, and friends of Sri Lanka, in a solemn yet uplifting celebration of national identity and progress.


The official proceedings commenced with the hoisting of the Sri Lankan National Flag by High Commissioner Senarath Dissanayake, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance of those who had sacrificed their lives for the nation. Religious leaders representing Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity conducted prayers and blessings, underscoring the country’s multicultural fabric.
Messages from H.E. the President, Hon. Prime Minister, and Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism were read aloud, with printed copies made available in Sinhala, Tamil, and English for attendees.

In his address, High Commissioner Dissanayake reflected on the Independence Day theme, “Let’s Rally for National Renaissance,” urging Sri Lankans worldwide to contribute to national rebuilding efforts with resilience and optimism. He outlined the government’s priorities, including poverty eradication, digital transformation, and sociocultural development, with a particular focus on sustainability through the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative.
A special presentation was delivered on the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, highlighting the government’s vision for environmental restoration and social responsibility. Attendees also engaged with a promotional desk showcasing Sri Lanka’s diverse travel destinations, further fostering interest in the country’s cultural and economic prospects.
The event was conducted in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, culminating in the playing of the National Anthem in Tamil, symbolising Sri Lanka’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Following the formal proceedings, guests were treated to a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast featuring milk rice, sweetmeats, and Sri Lankan tea, offering a warm taste of home for the expatriate community.
