
In a special podcast interview, French Ambassador H.E. Stephen Marchisio discusses the enduring relationship between France and Singapore as they mark six decades of diplomatic ties.

Singapore – In a significant milestone for international relations, French Ambassador to Singapore, H.E. Stephen Marchisio, recently highlighted the enduring partnership between France and Singapore in an exclusive interview with Ms. Nomita Dhar, Editor-in-Chief of IN Diplomacy. This interview is part of a podcast series commemorating the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two nations.
Ambassador Marchisio, who arrived in Singapore in January 2025, expressed his enthusiasm for his diplomatic mission and underscored the warm reception he has received. He noted that 2025 is a landmark year not only for Singapore, which celebrates 60 years of statehood, but also for the bilateral relationship between Singapore and France.
Discussing upcoming events, Ambassador Marchisio announced that French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue at the end of May, marking a key highlight in the year-long celebration. Additionally, the annual Voilah! French Cultural Festival is set to take place, further enhancing cultural ties between the two countries.
Ambassador Marchisio also emphasized the core elements that define the France-Singapore relationship, including strong connections in trade, defence, education, and, most importantly, mutual trust. He highlighted France’s commitment to promoting innovation, sustainable energy, and education exchanges between the two nations.
In response to questions about the French community in Singapore, he estimated that over 20,000 French nationals reside in the country, making it one of the largest French communities in Asia. He also acknowledged the strong economic ties, with around 1,000 French companies operating in Singapore and contributing significantly to local employment.
On the subject of education, Ambassador Marchisio expressed a desire to see more Singaporean students studying in France while acknowledging the robust exchange programmes that already exist. He also encouraged Singaporean students to explore the high-quality education options available in France, many of which now offer courses in English.
Looking forward, Ambassador Marchisio reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship through ongoing cooperation in defence, culture, trade, and education. His optimism is bolstered by the upcoming state visit of President Macron, which is expected to further elevate the France-Singapore partnership.
