Summit in Saudi capital strengthens GCC–US ties with focus on trade, defence, and regional diplomacy.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States reaffirmed their strategic alliance at a high-level summit in Riyadh on 14 May 2025, co-chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and U.S. President Donald Trump. The gathering underscored a joint commitment to bolstering economic integration, enhancing defence cooperation, and addressing pressing regional challenges.
Held at the invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the summit brought together leaders from all six GCC nations. President Trump’s attendance marked his first major overseas engagement since returning to office, echoing his 2017 visit to Riyadh. The summit highlighted the enduring partnership between the U.S. and Gulf states.
In his opening remarks, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized the evolving nature of the GCC–U.S. relationship, stating, “Our meeting with President Trump today builds upon the longstanding relationship and strategic partnership between our countries and the United States, evolving into a model of cooperation over the decades.”
Economic collaboration featured prominently in the discussions. Trade between the GCC and the U.S. surpassed $120 billion in 2024, with both sides expressing intent to further deepen ties in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure. President Trump highlighted the potential for significant investment opportunities, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative.
Defence and security cooperation were also central to the summit’s agenda. The leaders agreed to enhance joint efforts in combating terrorism and addressing regional threats. President Trump reiterated the U.S. commitment to working with GCC states to deter and confront external threats, particularly concerning maritime security in strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza and broader Middle East stability were key topics. Both parties expressed support for a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, in line with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international resolutions. Efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote peace in the region were emphasized.
The summit also addressed the situation in Syria, with President Trump announcing the lifting of sanctions on the Syrian Arab Republic. This move was welcomed by GCC leaders as a step toward alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people and fostering regional stability.
