Saudi Arabia’s capital secures official hosting rights with BIE approval and symbolic flag handover in Paris.
PARIS, France – The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has granted final approval for Saudi Arabia’s Expo 2030 Riyadh Registration Dossier during its General Assembly held in Paris on 17 June 2025, marking the official confirmation of Riyadh as the host city for the global mega-event.
The formal handover of the World Expo flag from the BIE to the Saudi delegation symbolised the transition from candidacy to execution. Led by Eng. Ibrahim Al-Sultan, Minister of State and Acting CEO of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), the Saudi team included Ambassador to France Fahad bin Mayouf Al-Ruwaily and other senior officials.
The Registration Dossier functions as the event’s master plan, outlining Saudi Arabia’s commitment to delivering an Expo that is both innovative and inclusive. It reflects the Kingdom’s broader strategy to position itself as a centre for international collaboration, in line with the ambitions of Vision 2030.
“This milestone marks a significant step forward in the Kingdom’s journey to deliver an exceptional and unprecedented edition of the World Expo,” said Al-Sultan. “It also underscores the world’s confidence in Saudi Arabia’s vision and capabilities.”
The dossier was approved in record time—almost half the usual duration—making Riyadh the fastest city to complete the process. This efficiency unlocks the next phase of Expo preparations, including the formal invitation of countries via diplomatic channels.
Expo 2030 Riyadh is scheduled from 1 October 2030 to 31 March 2031 and will be held on a sprawling six-million-square-metre site. Organisers expect over 40 million visits, with participation from more than 195 nations. The venue will be supported by world-class infrastructure and hospitality designed to leave a lasting legacy for the region.
