Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s dialogue in Tianjin, Prime Minister Wong urges global cooperation amid rising economic nationalism and fragmentation.
Tianjin, 25 June 2025 – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong delivered opening remarks at the World Economic Forum ‘Summer Davos’ 2025. In his address, he underscored the need for renewed international cooperation and inclusive multilateralism in the face of growing geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
Reflecting on global trends since the end of the Cold War, Prime Minister Wong noted the initial optimism brought by open markets, free trade, and the global flow of capital and ideas.
PM Lawrence Wong cautioned that the weakening of global norms and institutions poses serious challenges not just for small countries like Singapore, which risk marginalisation, but also for larger nations that face increasing difficulty in addressing global threats such as climate change, pandemics, and financial shocks.
He called on countries to work collectively to strengthen a multilateral system that is “more resilient, more inclusive, and better suited to the realities of our time.” Prime Minister Wong reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to playing its part through forging partnerships, updating global frameworks, and advancing dialogue in collaboration with partners such as the WEF.
