Germany and Singapore strengthened their Strategic Partnership during an official visit focused on innovation, trade, and multilateral cooperation.

Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Johann Wadephul, made an Official Visit to Singapore on 2 February 2026.

During the visit, Dr Wadephul was hosted to breakfast by Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. Both ministers reaffirmed the long-standing and close cooperation between Singapore and Germany in areas such as the economy, defence, science, and technology. They welcomed the good progress made under the Singapore-Germany Strategic Partnership, which was upgraded in 2024.

The ministers also launched the Singapore-Germany Year of Innovation (YOI). This initiative will strengthen cooperation in key areas including artificial intelligence, future and clean technologies, defence technologies, start-ups, business collaboration, and workforce development. The YOI will support the existing Framework for Sustainability and Innovation between both countries.

Dr Wadephul also paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong. Prime Minister Wong reaffirmed the importance of the Strategic Partnership and highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to multilateralism. He welcomed Germany’s interest in deepening cooperation with Singapore and ASEAN. They also exchanged views on current international and regional developments.

On the same day, Dr Balakrishnan and Dr Wadephul held a joint doorstop interview. Both ministers stressed the importance of upholding international law, free and fair trade, and the rules-based international order. They highlighted strong economic ties, with around 2,400 German companies based in Singapore, and welcomed recent progress on EU-Singapore trade agreements.

The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between Singapore and Germany and their shared goal of promoting stability, innovation, and cooperation in a changing global environment.
