Prime Minister Lawrence Wong delivered an optimistic and forward-looking speech at the 2026 Bo’ao Forum for Asia Annual Conference in Hainan, China on 26 March 2026, as part of his official visit to China from 25 to 28 March.
Marking the 25th anniversary of the forum, Wong highlighted Asia’s progress through openness and collaboration. He described the conference theme—new dynamics, opportunities, and cooperation—as timely, noting that change also brings new possibilities for growth and innovation.
Wong stressed that despite global challenges, countries can work together in practical and flexible ways. He reaffirmed the importance of international institutions such as the World Trade Organization and United Nations, while encouraging partnerships among like-minded nations to move forward more effectively.
He pointed to successful agreements like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and Digital Economy Partnership Agreement as strong examples of cooperation that drive trade, innovation, and connectivity across regions.
Wong also praised China’s role in advancing technology, green development, and global connectivity. He noted contributions through initiatives such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Belt and Road Initiative, which have supported development and created new opportunities across Asia and beyond.
He expressed confidence in China’s future growth and highlighted strong ties between Singapore and China. Wong said Singapore will continue to deepen partnerships, support regional integration, and promote shared prosperity, especially through closer cooperation with ASEAN.
Looking ahead, Wong emphasised that Asia has the potential to remain a key driver of global growth. He encouraged countries to choose openness and collaboration, stating that with the right decisions, the region can achieve an even brighter and more dynamic future.
